Lending a Hand

On Sunday am, we awoke to find a sailboat hard aground right near us. There were three men aboard, scurrying all over the boat, trying to get her off the bottom. Scott yelled over to them, and asked how much water the boat draws; meaning, how much water do they need for the boat to float. They said they needed five feet, but were in a maximum of four at the moment. We barely made it to the spot to anchor, and Scott wondered why they tried it. After watching them for a bit, he took the dingy over to try and help them.

By this time, the captain was in the water, trying to push the boat back off of the sandbar. This clearly wasn't working. Scott tried to get them to put their sails up. It was fairly windy, and this would heel the boat over to one side, and hopefully help them get "unstuck". They didn't go for it. He also tried to get them to hang off the boom of the boat, the pole that goes out from the mast of the boat. This may give them the same heel over effect. Again, they didn't go for it. He finally convinced them to give him an anchor, which he set with the dingy. This would allow them to heel themselves, or pull the boat to deeper water. Scott then wished them well and headed back to our boat, as he'd done and suggested all he could.

After another hour or so, they finally dislodged, and headed north. Hopefully, we have some good karma stored from this one. Here's a shot of Scott trying to help.
