The area around the Manatee Pocket was a popular place during prohibition. If you travel east, it is a short trip across the Atlantic to the Bahamas. Many people made a good living running rum to the states. The McCoy brothers used to bring it back in ladies handbags. They were good ol' boys, and well liked. When caught, they only did six months in prison for their crimes. They were also the only ones around who didn't cut their rum with water....hence, the saying the real McCoy!
One of the bothers died in the late forties(their names escape me). The surviving brother sold off their land in the early 50's. They owned 300 acres on a peninsula at the end of Hutchinson Island, right at the inlet. The 300 acres sold for 150,00.00!! Oh how times have changed.
Thank The Beav for this tidbit of info. She is a wealth of knowledge!
