We anchored in the Mumford Creek last night(Monday). Scott always checks and rechecks our anchoring locatioins. He always makes sure to choose the best place for tidal change and wind, so we can enjoy a relatively comfortable night.
The charts and books all mentioned plenty of water depth for Mumford Creek, but about 9pm or so, Scott's "captain" radar went off. He noticed that our depth finder was showing a MUCH lower number than we should have. Upon further investigation(ie, a stick into the water for measurement)he realized that we only had 8 inches below us. Considering that dead low tide was still two hours away, and we were in an area that has a tidal difference of 8-9 feet, we had to move the boat. It was either that, or sit on the bottom, heeled over hard.
SOOO, at 10pm, we raised the anchor, started the motor, and moved into the Brickhill River, with 20+ feet of water; plenty to spare at low tide. Scott made it seem effortless, when you consider that it was dark, with no land lights nearby, and in unfamiliar waters. We thankfully had a bright moon, which helped me to see him when we reanchored.
We plopped ourselves smack in the middle river. There was still plenty of roomand water depth for anyone who needed to, to pass us. The new spot was a bit windy and bumpy, but we didn't have to worry about water under the boat. Scott intends to let a few people know of the misinformation on this anchorage. I'm sure that the message to other boaters will be most eloquent!
