Jim gave us a ride into downtown. He told us a bit about the area on the trip over, and drove us down River Street, then dropped us off for the afternoon. River Street is the equivalent of the Inner Harbor for Savannah. It's on the Savannah River, and the street is lined with bars, shops and restaurants(what more do you need?). It was a beautiful, sunny, 65+ degree day, so we wandered River Street for a bit, then decided to take a trolley tour. It gave us a great overview of Savannah. I'd liked to have taken pictures, but the moving trolley made it too challenging.
Savannah is a beautiful city, with lots of different styles of houses in each neighborhood. The city was laid out with 24 squares, or parks. Three have been developed, but the others remain. The designer of Savannah, James Edward Oglethorpe, came from England, where the cities have a lot of green space as well. We could definitely spend days here, walking the streets and eating and drinking at all of the neat bars and restaurants.
We ate dinner at the Lady and Sons restaurant, owned by Paula Dean(Food Channel). The food and atmosphere were just ok, but my curiosity had been satisfied. After dinner, we got into a cab to go back to the marina, and went straight into the "back river bayou south". The cabbie was SO strange, he bordered on scary. Once we were back at the marina, we laughed, as well as breathed a sigh that we got back alive.
Here are some photos of Savannah and sites around our marina.
