We left Titusville, and headed for Vero Beach. Along the way, we anchored just off of Melbourne for a night. There were small islands all around us. Scott took the dingy to explore one, and saw the first coconut of the trip. At night, we could hear the wings of massive flocks of birds, sitting on the sand bars right near us...a weird noise. Here are some photos.
The trip to Vero Beach went smoothly, and we arrived at the Vero Beach Municipal Marina in the afternoon; we planned to use a mooring ball here for two nights. There are few mooring balls here, and many who wish to use them, so the marina has people share. We tied on to a 39' Krogen, already set at the ball. David and Ann, from Wilmington, DE, were aboard Journey. They keep the boat in Lankford Bay, on the back side of Rock Hall...small world!
We set out to explore Vero Beach as soon as we were tied up. It was a beautiful, 80 degree day, and we were eager to stretch our legs! Vero Beach has a free bus system that's great. The Grey Line ran to our marina. It stopped at the grocery store, and a few other stops before going to the transfer station. From there, you can connect to 4 or 5 other lines that will take you all over the area. VERY convenient for those without cars. We'd read that the boaters who stop here are big fans of the bus. There's no charge to ride it anywhere, they just ask for donations. We rode the Grey Line back past our marina. It then travels over to the beach. We jumped off there, and walked around a bit. The beach area has a mix of upscale hotels, some HUGE, as well as upscale houses, and a few old style beach hotels. The shops in the area are high end, so we saved our money. There are also endless investment companies and real estate places. We were getting hungry, and started to search for food. There aren't many places to choose from, and even less with outside seating...I don't get it. We walked by the Driftwood Resort, and I noticed a sign for Waldos. They advertised a deck, so we were sold.
Waldos is great! They have seating overlooking the ocean. Read the history of the place, and check out some pictures. We had some drinks and food, and just soaked up the warmth. We liked it so much, that we came back on Saturday, too.
We decided to walk back to the marina, and enjoyed looking at all of the different houses. It's so nice to see color, and things in bloom a few days before Christmas. Once back at the boat, we enjoyed the warm night, and spent Saturday relaxing, before heading out on the final leg to Stuart! Here are some pictures of Vero Beach.
