Back in the Chesapeake!

We left the visitor’s center and did a few more hours on the Dismal Swamp. After crossing under the Deep Creek draw bridge, we stopped just before Deep Creek lock, and the end of the canal. There is a park located here, and the Elizabeth Pier, which is free for boaters. We walked about a mile, back to La Familia, for dinner, where we’d eaten in November on our way south; the weather was almost as cold!

The next morning, we headed over to the lock, for the 8:30 opening. The lock keeper opened the gate ten minutes early, as we were the only ones traveling the canal; we hadn’t seen another boat for two days! We locked through quickly and easily, and before we knew it, we were traveling through Norfolk. As usual, there was a lot of hub-ub in the area, most of it commercial and military. Once we passed through Norfolk, we were back in familiar waters…the Chesapeake Bay!!

It was a beautiful, sunny day. Scott attempted to spend some time up on the bow, but the air was too cool. The temperatures out here are affected by the fact that the water is still pretty chilly. We traveled another six hours north (to make a total of 8.5) and anchored in Deltaville for the night. Once we were anchored, we all (cats included) enjoyed some time out on the cock pit. Back there, we were out of the wind, so the sun felt great. Scott got in a nap, after a long day of driving and navigating.

As we were anchoring, Scott noticed that the waters around us were full of jellyfish! Not quite the kind we see in the summer months. These had thin, stringy tentacles, and a very orange color to them. Scott was NOT happy about this! He hates jellyfish, and was upset so see any kind of them this early in the year. I told him that it was probably a mutant species that has adapted to the cold water temperatures. I’m surprised he didn’t turn the boat around right then, and head back south!

We took some pictures of the yucky things, along with others sights along the way.
