Southport, NC

We ventured out into a very windy Sunday afternoon, to see some of Southport. We walked along Bay Street, which runs along the waterfront. The wind, and my stomach, forced us to take a break and duck into The Provision Company for lunch. They have a small menu of fresh caught fish and homemade sides. You place an order at the counter, go get your own beer or soda, and then choose a table out on their covered porch to wait for your food. The roof of the porch is just a large canvass tarp, and the wind was trying hard to take it off....quite a noise! After some food, we were ready to brace the 25mph winds again.

Southport is a small town. Work boats line the small harbor, and the main street is lined with antique shops, candy stores and other specialty shops. There were few shops and restaurants open as we walked the streets. We came upon a maritime museum, but it was closed as well. On our way down in the fall, we learned that Sundays in the south are pretty quiet! We wandered the side streets a bit, looking at houses, but the winds finally won out, so we made our way back to the boat for dinner and a movie on board.

On Monday, we ventured out again. The wind was MUCH more kind, and we rode our bikes around town and enjoyed the sunshine. Later in the day, the winds picked up and the temperatures started to drop. We’re definitely getting back into Mid-Atlantic Spring-like weather! We decided to put the bikes away, and walk across the street to PJ’s Restaurant for dinner; we'd heard it's a popular locals spot.

PJ’s was formerly a gas station, with a mini mart. The owners have made little changes. There are still fuel pumps in place in the parking lot, and the check out counter, used for the mini mart is still intact, cup holders, candy racks and all. The florescent lights are still in place as well. Every other one is lit, to keep the interior of PJ’s from being glaringly, mini mart bright. There are brightly colored chairs at each table, as well as a lot of comfortable booths. The walls are covered with college pennants from all over the east coast region. We sat in a booth with an Ohio University pennant hanging in it....what are the chances??!! We were meant to eat there!
The food was great, and the prices were even greater! Our waitress was friendly and attentive, making our whole dinner experience here relaxing and enjoyable. We walked back to the boat, ready to get back on the “road” the next morning.

Here are some of our Southport pics.
