We left Deltaville at 6:30am, to get ahead of the strong winds that were supposed to settle in for the next few days. Even at that early hour, the bay was quite choppy. As we turned into the Potomac, toward our anchorage, Scott commented how much worse it was getting, and that it was a good thing we were now off of the bay.
We anchored in a creek off of the Yeocomico River, which is off of the Potomac River. The temperature was up to almost 80 and the winds were warm, so we enjoyed the rest of the day outside. The anchorage was typical of those along the Chesapeake Bay and it’s rivers…quite, scenic and protective.
The next morning, we picked up anchor and made the short 40 minute ride to the other side of the Yeocomico. We’d found a marina that was only 30 minutes from my parents’ house, so we decided to spend a few days there, and visit them for Easter. With the wind forecast for the next few days, we couldn’t safely travel anyway, so the timing worked out perfectly.
It was an enjoyable few days. We were able to visit with my parents and grandmother. My sister and brother-in-law were also visiting from Annapolis, so we got to see them as well. It was good to take a break from exploring new places, and to enjoy familiar surroundings and faces.
When we got back to the boat, Scott checked the weather forecast. We’d planned to take two to three days to get home from here. Once again, the winds changed our schedule. If we didn’t try to make it all the way home on Monday, we’d be waiting until at least Friday for favorable winds for traveling. SO, we decided to bite the bullet, and do another long-haul trucker day to try and get home in one shot, a 12-14 hour run.
The only concern was whether or not there would be enough water in our cove to get the boat to the pier. We’d be coming in before high tide, and north wind (which we’ve been having)tends to blow the water out even more. We decided to make the long trip, see what awaited us in the cove, and deal with it then. So we are off on the home stretch!!
